I have 3 super xl saws that seem to gather dirt in the air box, filters are good. I just picked up an old blue one and i noticed it has a bellows boot on the throttle rod rather than just a grommit. Any thoughts on were the dirt is getting in? I now have another one of the super xl saws

They will suck in dirt or dust anywhere there is a hole in the air box. The grommet in the filter around the stud that holds the filter and cover on is one place. The edge of the filter is another, it needs to fit without wrinkles. The port where the carb needles are accessible is another. Then there is the throttle rod like you mentioned, the choke rod and a drain old under the choke rod that should have a tiny cotter pin in it.
All these places will admit debris to the carb box if they are not in proper shape.
I think Leon has the filter grommet, and maybe something for the needles and throttle rod. The drain hole cotter is sometimes available on the bay, about $5 each last time I saw them. You can make something out of copper wire, shaped like a cotter. I have used single strands from stranded electrical wire. I am not keen on using steel wire in case it might get sucked into the carb.
Take a careful long around the carb box, you will see the possibilities.
Let us know what you find. :{)
