How do you determine the number of drive links needed in a chain? I have a 30” bar on a C 72 and need chain. I can go 3/8 or 404

Usually what the manufacturer recommends. What brand bar do you have? You have to use the pitch your clutch drum has.

It’s an Oregon super tropic hard nose bar. I have the rim type sprocket so I can go 3/8 or .404 by changing the sprocket. I have an easier time around this area finding the 3/8. I don’t know why that matters though, most of what I buy I don’t get locally anyway I end up ordering online

Any of the modern bars specify on the bar how many drive links the chain should have, as well as the gauge and pitch. Usually stamped or printed on in the end near the mount.

The bar information needs to be known so the gauge and nose radius can be figured in. I think undee will be able to spot it for you with that information. The last resort would be to get a hold of a correct otherwise chain and wrap it around to measure. That is a tough way to do it and full of ways to mess up.

I must admit I don’t have the bar yet, I just purchased it and it hasn’t come in yet. As soon as it does I will check the numbers and post them for you to see. I am not sure how old the bar is, it’s sold as NOS I will find out soon enough I guess

Just need to make sure the drive sprocket matches the bar.

The gauge of bar will also determine what pitch to use. Is it a .050 or .063? If it’s.050 , then 3/8 pitch is the practical choice as they don’t make .404 x .050 anymore.

Ok got the bar and the number on it is 3063-R347. Now I believe the first number is the length, 30”, the second would be the gauge, 63, but I could be wrong as rain there just guessing. I actually figured that because it was sold as .063 and 30”. The length of chain I still don’t know. There is another number, 17750 which I think is the Oregon part number.

Here’s a few pics of the bar. If all else fails it may be easier for me to take this to a saw shop that might have a roll of chain and just fit it up and make one. www.flickr.com/photos/138659658@N05

I think my 27" Oregon bars are using 98DL, so that's gotta be close.

I have a length of old worn chain that is about 130 links long, it is marked every 20 links. I put it together to solve this problem. Of course it only works for the same pitch but all my saws have 3/8 chain so it has worked so far.

I found # 17750 bar in a 1980 Oregon book describes it as a 32" bar for Homelite saws and takes 94 drives of .404 chain. Doesn't list any 3/8 as I don't think it was made at that time. chainsawlady
