After clicking on a link here about a file guide I landed on a Husqvarna site. While there I clicked on a video and the guy was filing a chain with a sawing or back and forth motion. All I have ever seen done or done myself is to push the file away against the tooth then lift it away from the tooth to return. In other words only file on the push stroke. Any thoughts on that? Have I been doing it wrong lol?

Lift on the return stroke. The file will not cut on the return stroke and if you leave it in contact with the work it will be dulled in the process unnecessarily. Be careful not to touch the cutting edge on the return stroke.

Be careful not to touch the cutting edge on the return stroke. Exactly. With saw chain I don't get crazy completely removing the file from the work but don't put any pressure into the tooth as I pull it back with just enough of a twist to give a little gap.
