I'm looking at the chain on my sxl-925...and its pretty hammered. its a 24" bar...I believe. how does one measure the bar specifically...I measured the exsposed amount of bar for cutting and came up with 24"...from the front of the saw/next to the dogs..to the tip.? correct? The chain says oregon...30 and then on the guide teeth it says 72... I see listed that it calls for 3/8 pitch...and some research seems to suggest that I want a semi chisel chain... what is semi chisel....full comp...skip...semi skip....I'm new to this. basically I want an all around decent chain..with less kickback potential...good for multiple types of wood. recommendations??

Matt. You have a 24" bar. The number on the drive link, 72, is Oregon's number for 3/8" pitch chain with a drive link thickness of .050" which is the gauge of the chain. The three most common gauges are .050", .058" and .063". The gauge matches the groove in the bar. To get a replacement chain, count the number of drive links and then find a chain at some store, Home Depot has a fair selection. Look for one with the same gauge and same number drive links. Find a chisel tooth chain or semi chisel. They make the best style for general cutting. By the way, the 30 you see, which I think is on the cutter stamped into the raker, is the recommended setting for the raker depth below the cutter. The raker controls how much the cutter will bite into the wood. Looks like the 925 with a 24" bar takes a 3/8 chain with 81 drive links

Matt - I don't know if you do ebay, but this sellers store stores.ebay.com/ASC-Auto-Parts_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm Has lots of chain. I've bought from him a few times, good prices, HONEST shipping charges, and good Oregon chain. The store prices are all "buy it now" so there's no bidding involved. Forgot to add - Semi chisel is best if you have dirtier wood, it'll stay sharp a little longer. Chisel chain, with it's sharp point will cut faster, but if you run it in the dirt or hit something solid, you can really mess it up.

72 Drive Links of 3/8 Pitch x .050 Gauge is for a 20" Bar, not a 24" Bar. Thanks. Bruce.
