Hi there!
I'm totally confused on how to read the serial number on a saw. Here is a few saws and their serial numbers for which I would like to know the year of fabrication. There are different kinds of serial numbers!
XL1 automatic T8102473
XL automatic T8101679
Xl1 4065T659
super xl 910 11970076
Buz 965231
26 LSC 373943
C5 1518459
C71 1716252
Thank you for your help.
Daniel

Don't feel like you are alone, the "system" is plenty strange. First off, 6 and 7 digit serial numbers do not decode, no one around here has found out how to do it anyway. Chainsawlady, Joyce, kept records for about 50 years of the sn's she and her husband sold from their shop. I don't have that list handy but if someone here does not come up with it first, I will check tonight. 8 and 9 digit numbers can be decoded by using TSB 185-008 from March of 1985, it is on the page below from Leon's site: www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/uploads/3/9/7/9/39792537/185-001_to_185-020_1985.pdf8 digit numbers use the first four for the date, the first is the year, starting with 2 = 1972 up to 1 = 1981. 1981 can also be C up to Z = 2004, maybe. The next 3 are the day of the year. The last 4 are the number built up to this unit on this day, this is the real serial number for the day. 9 digit number are the same as 8's except that the first digit indicates the assembly line, which we also do not know how to decode. The T at the start of your numbers is usually taken as Terry, of Canada. The T in the middle is unknown to me Your SXL 910 would be July 16, 1981 The others will have to wait to see if they fit with Joyce's list. (By the way, I get the date wrong about half the time, best to recheck. :{) )

Buz 12 of 1959 26 LSC 11-12 of 1952 C-5 early 1961 C71 early 1965
All these are rough, similar to saws that chainsawlady sold, not exact dates.
The others are not on her list, I think the Terrys and the XL1 are Canadian.
Anybody with better information please step right in.

I just got a great running terry SXL 925 I’m trying to figure out what year it is So I can determine if it’s the 82cc version or the late model of it that was supposedly only 77cc, The serial number is TG31 70311 any help would be appreciated thanks.

The only way to know for certain is to measure the bore as the saw could have been rebuilt in it’s lifetime

The only way to know for certain is to measure the bore as the saw could have been rebuilt in it’s lifetime Well really I’m just trying to determine the year because I don’t think this has been rebuilt it was from somebody’s collection but it doesn’t have the red top on it for the air cleaner it’s black so I know that makes it a little bit later model and with it being TG on the prefix of the serial number T being because it’s a Terry saw I believe G after the T If I am reading how to determine Homelite serial numbers properly a G code is from 1985 and from my understanding from researching was that Homelite didn’t make the change to the bore to drop it down to 77cc until 1990 and onward. But that’s if I’m interpreting how you read the serial properly I’m not sure.

Built on Wednesday - November 13 - 1985 Likely 82cc .. as the "C" version wasn't introduced until about '89. Examine the exhaust port to see if it's the oval port. It will be bridged port if it has been updated.
