Hi, as per the title, I have a 330 saw that will not idle, I have found that if I remove the oil pump (it pumps oil) it will idle, if I place my finger over the pulse hole in the mounting plate the saw will stop. Can someone suggest a fix? I have checked the pulse tube and the reeds.
When this saw was given to me, it was going OK till you picked it up, that would allow air to leak into the split boot, but since I replaced that the above problem has started.
Not sure where to go from here...
thanks

With a boot leak the idle may have been adjusted down to nothing to control the idle speed, have you tried to up the idle speed screw? (Does it have one? I am no 330 guy!)

I have the idle set to full (screw all the way in) the High & low screws are 2 turns out ready for final adjustments.

I know this is nit-picking, but I'd set the High at 1 turn open and the Low at 1.5 turns. That's far closer to where I end up setting most saws.
Thinking about this logically (which I've done off and on today trying to come up with a good answer!), with the oil pump removed, you are creating a vacuum leak. The pump operates on vacuum pulses from the crankcase, so if the saw runs fine with a vacuum leak, then it is over-fueling under normal conditions. If your saw has a Zama carb, you may end up turning the Low side in to only 1 turn open. Not at all uncommon. You'll want to adjust it so that the saw runs with the pump installed (obviously), but you'll want to lean the Low side to the point that it will accelerate smoothly. The idle speed should not drop if you let it idle for a minute or so...likewise if it blows a big cloud of smoke when accelerating, the low side is still too rich.
Keep us posted!

What onlyhomelites said and I would add to reset the idle screw more like normal, just a little way off the all the way out. So that if it fires it has a chance to idle. Also in trying to fix this I would reinstall the pump or plug its pulse line. Please do keep us posted. Others might chime in here too with their thoughts on this. (I am still not a 330 repair guy.)
