I've started collecting the parts I need to restore this old 5-30N. I've recently found a NOS drive belt ( ) in a parts lot I purchased, I've got a belt cover on the way and I have a correct rope drum in my stock. I've also got a carburetor kit set aside, assuming this is a Brown carburetor. I'll post a separate thread for the parts I'm still hunting. The paint is terrible, so a full repaint will happen, but I want to get it running first and make some cuts. I've also got a carburetor kit set aside, assuming this is a Brown carburetor. Does it have a brass fuel line or a flexible fuel line?

Nice spec sheet! The fuel line was flexible...at one time!

Beauty and the beast all rolled into one. Your pictures show the size of the powerhead in an accurate way. Hope to see some videos of your progress and just maybe the stool will get some new colors. Looks like a fun challenge.

I've got one that got running a while back it has an HP-6B carb. Took the belt drive cover off to show the setup. Noisy booger. youtu.be/K6S-HLZigCY

Hey sawnami (or anyone else with experience on the Tillotson HP-6B carburetor), any tips for getting this old pig tuned right? I've been through the carburetor and cleaned out a ton of crap while installing a new carb kit. The pickup hose in the tank has been replaced and the shut-off valve allows fuel to flow. I got it to fire once for about 10 seconds, but it bogged down (smoking heavily) and flooded out. Now I can barely get a pop once in a while and I broke a good sweat cranking this damned thing! There are two adjustments; I'm assuming the T-handle screw on the clutch side is the main jet, but there's also a screw on the upper starter side that appears to do some sort of metering. I don't have a diagram for the HP-6B in my mess of literature, so I've been doing a bit too much guessing!

Leon, you ever find a starter cable for this? I might have a way to fab one, from cable and a rod for the end.

I switched the pulley out for one that takes a rope. But if you have a way to fab one, I'm all ears! There's definitely something I did wrong in the carburetor. I was able to shut-off the fuel and get it running, but it won't idle; floods out. Also, my shin has a nice gouge out of it...evidently I pulled right on a compression stroke and it came up and got me with the bucking spike. To say I was not happy is an understatement! But hearing it run for longer than a few seconds was nice!

I’ll look through my junk to see if I have that carb diagram.

If Greg can't find any, I will send you a copy. It was a LONG time ago but I did do some rebuilding of that carb. Does yours have an in and out valve on the bottom? Did you put them in new when you rebuilt the carb.? I do remember we always replaced those two valves. I still have them new. I don't have diaphragms or gaskets for that HP but do have for some of the other carbs. chainsawlady

Hi Joyce,
I cleaned the in & out valves, but the kit did not include them. I may be placing an order really soon if I don't get this figured out.
Thanks for the help!

I don't recall anything that was a problematic. You adjust the high speed mixture first then low speed.

Thank you Dan, that is exactly what I needed! My first mission will be to figure out why the inlet needle isn't seating, as I'm almost certain that is why it is leaking fuel profusely...likely why it floods out while running. I'll update when I make some progress!

The reproduction kit I ordered from Sugar Creek is just the gaskets and diaphragms. I'll go through it once more...

It looks like the diaphragm is adjustable from the outside, is that correct? If that is true, that adjustment could be off causing the flooding.
(You used to be able to adjust the float level on come automotive carbs from the outside, with the engine running if you wanted to.)
I love that you are supposed to adjust for smoke, if no smoke, its too lean!!

Just started reading this thread, this going to be good. I have an old Massey mower that used cogged tied belts on a deck that the blades overlap, the Belts are NLA, but I have found a few by searching old parts warehouses inventory on the dark web using excel codes and part numbers, such as cell spacing + part number. Often the pdf of a small business comes up if they have the part in inventory, but it wont come up on a regular web search because most businesses don't use searchable databases.

I’ll look through my junk to see if I have that carb diagram. No I don't have that one. The 5-30 and 5-30N seem to use several different carbs with different fuel feeds. H-6A was a pressure -gravity, HP-6B was a pump with ball checks, 1-CS and HP-19B pump with flapper valves.

The reproduction kit I ordered from Sugar Creek is just the gaskets and diaphragms. I'll go through it once more... Is the old diaphragm and new exact in dimensions?. I know I got a McCulloch flat-back carb kit that just wouldn't work right because the fabricated reproduction diaphragm wasn't close enough to the original. I ended up finding a NOS kit from a vintage kart racing site and it worked great.
