I know this may seem stupid to ask, but how does one tell the difference between the C-5, C-7, C-9, etc... Does the serial # give us a clue or does one have to get into the cylinder and measure the bore of the machine. I feel . I have a red "C" series with "NO" ID on it at all. But I do have a Blue C-5 with the decals still intact. The red one is confusing me . Thanks for any feedback on this lack of knowledge on my part. Like I mentioned sometime ago, I'm new to this chain saw collection and Restoration ambition I'm embarking on. If necessary, I could take a digital pic of the saw and maybe that may help you pro's out there. Thanks, TM

Yessir, those C series can be a bear sometimes. So many parts interchanged and its tough to know if the saw is in its original configuration or has been interchanged unless you've owned the saw for all its life. If you know the parts are all original, the quick color check is blue for C-5, all red for C-7 and Red with green for the C-9. If you're not sure the parts are all original, then measuring the bore is the next step. 2" bore on C-5 and C-7, and 2-1/16" bore on the C-91. Number of clutch shoes is another point where C-5s only had 3 and the 7 and 9 had 6, but again, there's no guantee this hasn't been interchanged either. Best thing I'd suggest is get an IPL and go through the differences and see what matches up and what doesn't.
