Im new to working on saws, but I have experience working on cars and lawnmowers. I picked up an old Homelite Xl Automatic on Craigslist for $50. It sat for a long time, I flushed the gas tank out, changed the fuel filter, and cleaned the points.. After that it fired up on the 3rd pull. It runs awesome the torque actually makes you hand move when you rev it. I tried a test on a piece of wood in the yard and it cut well but slowed down slightly during. The saw seemed to have less power after that even in a free rev. It seems like its not reaching the same rpms it was before... Im wondering if the air filter fell apart and is clogging the carb. Where is it on the saw? Also how long of a bar can I put on it and what brand of chain cuts best. I was hoping to use a 16 or 18 inch bar if I could.

The air filter is located behind the black cover the choke lever comes out of. As far as the bar I have one with a 16'' bar and it works okay.

The foam air filter with age can break up and migrate into the carb with a few higher RPM blips. The saw works fairly well with up to a 16" bar if you don't crowd it. This is a walnut stump.

Thanks for answering so fast. I'm going to try and find one of the Homelite 16 inch Bars today. What brand of chain do you guys reccomend? I'd like it to cut the best it can.

Yes it is. If you are willing to run an Oregon branded bar, you might find something a few dollars cheaper...but you'd be happy with what you found.

IS the Oregon Bar better quality? Or just a cost savings?

IS the Oregon Bar better quality? Or just a cost savings? Not really. The NOS bars are usually made by Oregon or Windsor.

The big question is what pitch is your saw now, and what pitch is that bar and chain is.

After re reading, if your saw has points, than it's most likely would have 3/8 lo pro chain. I'm not sure what pitch the bar and chain is from that eBay ad. Could be 3/8 lo pro or .325.

And, they are not both compatible with the same sprockets. The bar nose sprocket, the chain, and the clutch sprocket all need to be the same pitch. Since you have the clutch, you need to match the chain and bar to it.

I never paid attention to my Super 2s. Sat in boxes for many many years until I drug one out and got it running. It become so much fun I didnt want to grab for my bigger saws. They do have their limits, dont kill it lol. IMO it runs a 16" bar just fine. As for the bar and chain combo on Ebay, yes I would jump on it if I were in need.

Does anyone know if that chain is low profile or not? The homelite part number for the bar and chain is HOM-DA04688

I think it's an 0.050 chain... I found the spec on another site. Is there a way to check?

Unfortunately I didn't see BDM53ent's post. SO I only bought a Homelite 3/8 .050 16 inch bar. Ive heard Stihl makes the best chain, does anyone have experience with either of these chains? STIHL PICCO™ Micro™ 3 (PM3) or STIHL PICCO™ Super 3 (PS3) I read the description and both sound good, and both had reviews from poeple running saws of simmilar CC's and Horsepower. They both say they're low kick back and low profile chains. So I am wondering which one will be a better cutting chain? Or am I just looking at the wrong type all together?

Stihl chain has a thicker layer of chrome plating making it last longer than others but it is also a little harder to file when sharpening when it does get dull. The PM3 is semi chisel and will last a little longer between sharpenings and is a little more forgiving of dirt. The PS3 is a full chisel and will cut the fastest but it will also stop cutting if you hit dirt with it. I've got PS3 on the "Angry Mosquito". :-) youtu.be/IkGZt5AtD9U

Has anyone bought chain and had it not sit down into the gear on the end of the bar? I bought 2 different 3/8 0.050 chains and both wouldnt sit down into the gear at the end. They look fine on the clutch gear and even fit the channel in the bar. But at the end of the bar the links like stand up on the gear.

Can you post pics of bar, any any numbers on bar. Bar may be .325 pitch, which won't work with 3/8 lo pro chain.

My vote is for the Stihl FULL-chisel PS3 for 3/8" lo pro. I run this on my climbing saw, absolutely awesome chain.

The chain should ride around on the nose sprocket and not touch the bar. That's what it's there for. Iffin' it's really standing proud, it may be a bar for 1/4" chain. Common on the real early XL.
