This is a long story, so I will condense. -crankshaft seal leaking, magneto side - nearly impossible to replace, had to destroy bearing to get at it - new seal and bearing installed - all that jostling around killed the 50 year old "worlds first solid state ignition" - sadness, this was my dads saw, now DOA. I tried to locate point conversion kit information/parts, no luck. - 2 years later now 2017, found nos modules on Ebay and took a chance on them (2) one dead for sure other missing coil - more sadness, now dead forever, until I see a newer cd ignition will fit, (as shown on last page of IPL) same as those used on XL98 demo saws (a) series I have a few of those laying around but could not remove backer plate - called my local source, hooray! he had believe it or not, the ENTIRE kit as shown in manual, module, backer plate and new magneto!!! We're in business! - installed last night, and after 2 years of silence she runs again, emotional, damn right. My dad was not Paul Bunyan, but a farmer who used it occasionally, then I used it as teen and my brother did when he took over the farm, then I rescued it.

I wouldn't throw the dead ones away....you just never know....
A story, Working on a Homelite 360, no spark, disconnected kill switch, no spark. Started replacing parts with known good parts from a running saw. Replaced module, still no spark, replaced coil, still no spark. Hmmm, the only thing left is the flywheel. One of the bulletins say to put a 1/2 nut on the magnet, if you can shake it off, replace flywheel. Removed flywheel and put nut on, shook the daylights out of it, nut still there. Replaced flywheel with one from running saw anyways, still no spark!!!! Now I'm more than annoyed. I've replaced all the parts and still no spark. Or did I? The wiring!!! Looking at the wires closely, (these have a sheath over them) very small cracks in the insulation. I'm guessing, with the wire close to metal, voltage was leaking from the wire to ground. Gave every wire 2 coats of shrink wrap and saw runs. This was 40 year old wiring.

View AttachmentGreat story about a great saw. It sucks to hear about the bad luck with parts, but there's nothing like bringing your Dad's saw back to life!
