I intend to paint my XL-500 sometime soon. The serial tag is certainly usable but it is bent away from the starter housing a bit. I think it should come off and get straightened.
Any suggestions on how to get it off without damage? Maybe a sharpened V shaped tool like a nail puller? Anyone actually removed a tag without damage?
How about putting it back on? I believe the rivets are actually drive screws, anyone have a source for new ones? The tag and rivets are not shown on the IPLs that I have seen.

Funny thing Dan, I just did this on a XL-500! It's a bit of a PITA, but they are a spiral grooved pin if that makes any sense. The pins are reusable, so that's the good news. I was able to "lift" the pins a bit using a small screwdriver...once I got them away from the tag a 16th of an inch, the vice grips pulled them the rest of the way out without doing any damage. This process bent the plate a little, but nothing that I can't bend back. Ill try to remember to snap a couple of pics tonight after work.

And I HIGHLY recommend putting the plate where you can find it when you re assemble. Yep, Im still looking for my C7 plate.

Nothing worse then looking for something that you hid from yourself.... This is the reason I try to put all the parts of a project in a single box, of course that means they all have to fit in there... Small box for small parts in big box for all parts. Label box, do not tip over. Sometimes it actually works! I use a lot of 3"x4" zipper bags for the really little stuff, like con rod needles and small screws, all bags labeled cuz my memory is poor.
