What do others think about adding a new sub topic that would be titled something like "All About Chain"? It could have topics on sharpening, repair, maybe a list of old numbers and there pitch and gauge. Sprockets and bars could be included too.

Sounds like a good idea, something with a guide for proper filing and setting of depth gauges.

I like the idea too, sharpening chain is something I never learned to do, but would like to take the time and learn the proper way.

go for it.
I have guessed all my life & done by hand with files never really done it properly I plan on in future to get an electric sharpener but still have quite a bit to learn.
I am unsure of pitches & how to check to see what pitch. I never really gave it any thought I bought chain from a independent dealer in bulk just brought my old chain & he would rivet me a chain to fit for any of my saws.

I learned alot from the oregonchain.com website. There is a dowload there telling alot about modern chain.

My question is about building race chain...kind of. I know that when building a race chain the weight is reduced, and the cutters have very aggressive angles. The trade off for very high speed cutting is they get dull after just a few cuts. great for a race, bad for bucking logs all day. Are there any race tricks that can be Incorporated into a work chain without sacrificing durability? Lets assume that we are cutting clean hard wood with full chisel chain, we are well aware of increased kick back potential, and we are keeping the bar tip out of the ground. I guy on AS last year posted that he filed his chains with a file that was 1 size smaller than recommended. This gave him more 'hook' He claimed his chain cut great, but I think that durability of the edge would be an issue. I realize that every things a trade off, I just want to hear others thoughts and ideas. CSW
