I was given an Xl saw by a neighbor. this saw is about 30 years old but looks almost new. The first thing I did was to clean the fuel tank, replace the fuel line and filter. I took the carb off and after tearing it down soaked it in carb cleaner. A rebuild kit was installed. I found the coil to be bad and installed another. I'm getting fuel, spark and air but this saw will not start and run. It has started 3 times but only for a few moments. I'm at a loss, who might help?

Are you certain that fuel is getting to the engine? Carburetor cleaner is terrible for rubber parts, so the fuel inlet needle may have swelled if it was exposed to the cleaner. Also, what shape were the carburetor diaphragms in? What you are describing sounds a lot like a carburetor that needs new gaskets & diaphragms. I'm assuming that it will start on full choke for a few seconds, but will not run beyond that?

How did you check it to know that you're getting fuel?
