This seems to have a 2 piece fuel tank? does it, and if it does does anyone know where i can purchase a gasket for it. I have the boiling gas problem that you seem to be a problem and i have seen already on this site how to fix.

Yes and no, some of the fuel tanks on these saws were permanently bonded together and others were not. If your's is two piece the gasket you would need is 65642 and I would think either site members edgeandengine or lawnmowertech37 would have one for you.

I don't remember the SXL having a bonded gas tank, but I know the early XL101, and 102 had this problem. My parts listing is at the lake cabin so I can't reference it. It is easy to tell though, you should be able to see screws holding the two halves of the tank together. Of course, the gasket isn't that hard to make once you have the tank apart if it has screws. Buy a sheet of gasket material, place it on a board and trace the outline of the tank using the side with holes. Then take a drill and drill holes in the gasket and cut it out. Clean all the old gunk off both halves of the take before reassembly. If you use gasket adhesive on one side, make sure it will withstand gasoline!

kc, try your local garage and ask for anaerobic sealer and apply this to both sides of the gasket when reassembling.

a7: I have one sxl that is bonded, it still has screws to hold the sides together is just appears there is an epoxy or "weld" of some kind on the seam. And it is originally that way, still has the original paint on the tank.

Red, If it is some type of epoxy then I would think the screws would be nearly impossible to remove. Maybe it is some type of sealer that just hardens up. Has anyone ever tried to separate a SXL tank? What I do know for sure is the early XL 101s and maybe the 102 also, can't remember that far back, actually had tanks that were glued together without screws. Most, if not all, failed and I replaced many under Homelites warranty program. Homelite provided the new tank but the owner had to pay the labor. I suppose it was some engineers idea to keep assembly costs down.

The XL 400 [same as SXL basically] doesn't show a gasket for the fuel tank on the IPL. So maybe it was just a sealant from the factory. The oil res. does have a gasket. When making them [gaskets] I have an old multi head leather punch for the holes, does a nice clean job. A paper punch is good too for inside corners [hole is usually too big for screws]

Hmmm...i suppose it could be some type of sealer, but it must get pretty darn hard, which is why I was originally thinking an epoxy like bond. I can't tell you for sure as it is still covered with paint which limits what I can conclude. All I can say for sure is that I havent tried to take apart a tank on one of these before, but it must be possible on some of them as I have seen tank halves for sale before.
