Hey Guys Im new here and am in the process of restoring my grandfathers ol blue xl 12. First of all...its a WRECK. Missing fuel line, grommets, muffler assem, trigger lock, and it looks like somebody used tie wire to hold the choke lever to the carb lol. Junking this dino is not an option. Hell or high water I am going to fully restore the beast to its former glory (paint, decals, ect.) so it can be around for my kids. I attempted to snag an identical running model off of ebay, but I underestimated the passion people have for these ol axes and lost out on the auction (sold for around $170.00 with shipping). So here I am hopefully in the wise arms of you forum members to guide me on this epic. questions: -PARTS (where can I get them!) -ID (I can't seem to track down my exact model ex. for in pics) Thats mostly my 2 biggest hold ups as of now. I look forward to hearing from you guys and will spend the meantime continuing research. THANKS

That's an early XL12. I bought one last year in similar condition, even came in a similar box and in as many pieces. We put it together, added a new plug, and it fired up. It needs a carb kit and fuel line but it ran with very little work. I had to buy a muffler cover for mine, there were several complete mufflers on ebay for about 15 bucks. Make sure you get one that includes the bolts, as it takes a particular stud that holds the muffler case on, then the baffle and muffler cover fastens to the studs. There are tons of parts for these on ebay constantly. There are also people on this forum that sell parts, they could probably help you out. Just go to the main page and scroll down a bit. Good luck, these are great saws.

What's the serial number on the plate by the kill switch? How about a pic of the entire left and right sides. Looks like an early model but hard to tell without full side pics.

Looking at my notes on service memos that showed serial numbers, it looks like a very late 64 or very early 65 serial number. It takes the two bolt aluminum stack muffler. Parts should come up fairly frequently on eBay that will match your saw if you can bide your time. I recently bought an early 64 model for nostalgia reasons that matched the one that my Dad first purchased. It came up on CL locally and turned out to come coincidentally from a few miles away from where my Dad first purchased his.
