I recently bought an xl and on the right hand side of the saw near the top up by the throttle it has 1-4 numbered on the side. Whats throwing me off is that there's a primer bulb which appears to be an attempt to fix a problem. There's no check valve in it so the primer bulb does nothing. I'm sure this is not factory engineering so could someone please explain what the numbers are if I can get the correct parts? Thanks in advance I'm new to this site and I think it's nice to have access to info that's tough to find on your own.

It sounds like somebody has changed out the engine case...the numbers are meant to be oil flow settings. Originally there would have been a control valve there that let you adjust the amount of oil flowing to the bar. That setup would've used a a primer cap with the primer bulb in the fuel cap. These models used a number of different setups for primers and oil pumps. One version of the primer had the bulb mounted exactly where it is on yours; that's why I think the engine case has been changed out. Does the saw run okay?

Yes the thing is perfect other than missing the right part. There is a primer bulb in the fuel cap and it works well. That makes more sense that there would be an adjustable valve rather than a manual oiler which was my 1st guess. Thanks a lot for the help. I was able to track down the right part.
