I have had a real spot of luck these past couple days. Luck in the worst manner of the word. To begin Saturday night I plastered a deer with my truck..nothing a measely 1000 dollars wont take care of. Ok so not terrible, sh*t happens. Then to cap it off I am gonna fine tune my freshly rebuilt Super XL, which cost roughly 250 dollars to do (I might add) So then I think lets go ahead and pull the muffler while we are here to make sure everythings ok internally. But what do my eyes appear (I'll give you a hint - it aint santa claus and his reindeer) SCORING!!!!!!!!!! Apparently, somehow, the circlip on the exhaust side had come out of it groove in the piston - AFTER I SPECIFICALLY GOT A NEW ONE CUZ THE ORIGINAL DIDNT FIT WELL ENOUGH - and checking and triple checking to make sure it was in its groove properly and the clip was in the 12 o'clock position. None the less the piston is yet again shot as well as the rings. I am just praying the cylinder is ok...if not I will be selling the b**ch. On that note I am now looking for a new piston...bid me your lowest price (please). Sorry, venting a little.

oldbigred, You might want to investigate the cylinder too before spending too much more money. There are lots of these saws out there that you could probably get for the price of repairs. Real sorry to hear your ordeal. Good luck!

Yeah I will check it out hopefully tomorrow or the next day. I would think it'd be ok as the aluminum piston was new and still relatively "soft" which hopefully saved the chrome cylinder. But like I said if the cyl is shot I will prolly just sell it as parts to recoup some of my loss. Then look for a bigger saw.

I can't belive that has happened to your saw, What a rotten deal. After all that work. What I do when s@#t like that happens to me, is set the thing aside for a few months. Then look at it with fresh eyes. The anger will have passed, the money spent will be forgotten, and all that you will have in front of you is a nice SXL that needs a piston (hopefully that's all).
I hope that after a thousand dollars damage to your truck, you were able to take the deer and butcher it and put it in your freezer. Jim

This truly SUX! The advise given by CSW is golden, both for the saw and the deer. Just know we all followed along and know you did everything correct, but sometimes shit happens to the best of us. Last year I thought I toasted my 750, took me two months to pick it up again. Let me know if I can help with anything.

Thanks guys. Now that I think about it I probably should have put this in off topic. But I guess this works. Anyway, Im actually ready to give it another shot. I'm oing to disassemble it today to do more further internal assessment. Hopefully with any kind of luck at all I will be able to get it back up and going with just a new piston and rings. Though I am still baffled as to how the clip on the other piston got out of the groove. None the less, like I said I will for sure be needing a new piston and rings (unless there is more extensive internal damage) so if anyone has one or knows where I could pick one up for a reasonable price that would be great. Thanks again guys. p.s. A bummer on the deer couldnt find the darn thing after I hit it. haha.

Well, Got it disassembled this morning to find something I have never heard of, nor seen. The clip was still in the piston! However, I was able to almost freely slide the pin into and out of the piston as though the clip was not large enough to retain the pin. This clip was the one I replaced, it was ordered from our local stihl/shindaiwa/multitude of brands dealer. He looked up the part number and ordered the part which was supposed to be a genuine Homelite part. I also found the cylinder to be toast (two lines of scoring too deep to ever be usable. So I am not sure what I am going to do with the saw. I hate to see it go to waste, but I also hate to spend more money to fix it. If anybody has a nos cyl/piston kit cheap let me know. Thanks -obr

Ok so my curiousity is getting the best of me and I have to ask: has anyone ever seen or heard of what happened to me occuring (the wristpin being able to slide past the retaining clip)??
Also still looking for a p/c. thanks all.

Without seeing this in person its hard to say much, but whats the chances that the clip is the right size (external diameter) but the wire used to make it is too thin?
How well do you know this dealer?

I know the dealer fairly well, we have been doing business with them for several years and they seem to know whats going on if thats what you mean.
I do wish I could get a clear enough picture to post on here, though what you said kind of seems to hit the nail on the head-the diameter seems correct yet the wire too small to restrict pin movement.
I plan to go and talk to the parts dept. and the mechanic at the dealer in the next couple of days to maybe try to clear some things up, because this truly confuses me.

Well, the confusion is starting to subside. I went out and dug out the other clip I got when I got the new one from the dealer and compared it to the one that originally came with the piston. This first pic shows that the two clips are the same diameter (the one on top is the original with the new one underneath) The second pic gives you an idea of the difference in thickness of the wires. The new clip is substantially smaller than the original.

This is probably crazy and impossible but im going to ask anyway. It it possible to put an XL-102 cylinder on a Super XL. I know both saws are the same bore/stroke and that the 102 comes with a comp. release while the Super doesnt. But is it possible? I ask because I have found a piston for the super at a resonable price but no luck on a cylinder.

Calvin,
The piston is genuine Homelite, but I think the clip may not have been. The dealer it was purchased from will be talked to in the next couple days.
In the mean time what kind of deal can you get me on a piston as I found a guy selling oem ones for 30 bucks.
Also, where can I get one of those aftermarket cylinders?
Thanks much. -obr
