I have used these chips for years on many brands of chanisaws, trimmers and engines. I have some wired up for testing purposes with alligator clips on them. Some chips do seem to perform better on some applications than others for some reason. I disconnect the wire going to the points and run it out side the saw case to attach my test chip to. Sometimes you might have to splice a longer wire on. Remove the plug from the engine, connect a new properly gaped spark plug to the coil wire and groung the plug to the metal case. I have a new plug with a groung wire soldered to it.. Connect the chip wires. One to ground, one to the wire that connected the coil to the points and make sure the chip case is properly grounded. Pull the rope and check the spark. It should be amazingly bright. If not, switch the chip wires around and try again. If spark is bright now, this is the way you want to connect the chip when installing it on the saw. The spark from these chips can be very bright accross a plug gaped at .025 and may not spark very well accross a conventional spark tester unless you have one with an adjustable gap. You have also tested the ingnition coil. If you have good spark with the chip most of the time the coil is good. You can either install new points and condensor ar a chip. I usually leave all the pionts harware as it was in case someone ever would want to go back to points. Sometimes if you have no spark just removing the coil and shinning up the mounting surfaces with emery cloth so there is a good ground can fix a no spark or weak spark problem. If I have a saw apart enough to take the coil or ignition module off I do and shine up the mounts and set the armature gap just as preventative maintainence.
You can ONLY use the chips on point style magneto ignition to replace the points.. There are many different configurations of these chips and prices.
This is just a little primer on these chips.
A few examples. Have used with good results

New Flickr picture of chips I use for testing coils and replacing points. Try them til I find one with best performance.
