Hi Guys,
New to the forum, just looking at making an ice saw for cutting through lake ice in the 12-24 inch range. I have an XL15 with a 20 inch bar on it. The saw seems to be powerful enough for the size and handles wood pretty well with the 20 inch bar. Ice doesn't seem to require as much power to cut, most ice chains have rakers ground off and some are skip tooth. I think it would need a 32 or 36 inch bar to be an effective ice saw. I guess my question is does this little saw have enough power for that length bar, in ice only. I realize it would not cut wood. Or should I look at another old homelite and if so what would you recommend. I should mention that I know very little, so be kind.

ive have no experience with cutting ice. but my SXL which is a little bigger than the xl15 has a 24 inch bar on it. It handles it just fine. But thats the most my SXL can prolly handle. IF your saw isnt in top shape like the compression is under 150psi I wouldnt use a 24 inch bar at all. A 20 inch on a XL12 or XL15 is pushing it too. thats my opinion..

I'd like to get at least a 28" or possibly 32" bar on this saw. If I were to cut wood I would not consider this possible, but ice is different. It cuts much easier than wood. If you run a skip tooth chain the saw is not working as hard because it's got half as many teeth right? Combine that with the fact that ice is much softer and easier to cut than wood and I start to think this may be doable. But I don't want to invest any money into something that won't work or is dangerous.
