I double checked the book and it says only to not get the saw too hot after an overhaul during the break in period and to use a rich setting. It goes on to say you can use one heatrange higher during break in to prevent fouling, so they must mean to run it more than slightly rich?
The only thing they say about honing is in regards to Iron lined cylinders, so your good there.

Ok, well I thought I'd check on the cylinder, better now than later I suppose. I figure if the gaskets will seal up the carb will be good to go as its clean and the diaphram is good and pliable, I will get her running decently, richen her up a little and let her run progressively longer each time, go about 2min cool it, 5 min cool it, 10 and 15. By then it should be good to go cut. thanks much.

Well, after soaking the gaskets for 24hrs there is some improvement, I could get it to start and run for awhile (bout 30sec) but then it dies because the carb is still leaking. So I will need the gasket/diaphram for the Zama C2 carb. Thanks guys.

I dont have your kit, sry.
That must be some serious leak, is anything damaged?
I do like your idea for a break in procedure though.

Yeah there almost has to be a hole in the diaphram, which doesnt make a lot of sense either because its pumping up fuel fine and everything, but once it gets there it runs out of the carb like nobody's business. So hopefully somebody has a kit for me, or at least a kit # would be a good start.
To me the proceedure makes sense, to progressively warm the p/c so they break in evenly and "get used" to higher temps/rpms slowly. I guess it doesnt seem right to just stick new materials in there and run it like its already broken in.

part # 94952 you can also get a Zama GND-8 or oregon 49-860 all them are the same kit i will check to see if i have any of these in stock and let you know here shortly the complete carb is a A07048 it also shows a walbro carb for that model part # A-68371-C or a SDC -87
i checked and i dont have any of them zama kits i normally keep walbro in stock i try to stay shy from zama cause of where its made etc. thats why when someone orders a zama primer bulb i send them a oregon replacement cause the oregon replacement plastic parts are made here in usa
when it comes to kits i normally stick with walbro having them on hand at least they are either usa or mexico or italy or austrailia thanks calvin

Yeah I hear you about the Zama, but all i wanna do is get the thing running, so if you know where i could get either a zama or oregon that would be great. I dont really want to swap carbs out due to the $$ factor, I've really already spent too much on this thing.

Hey Calvin, I will prolly try to order that mid-week next week as the next 3 days are going to be busier than H*** for me and I'm gonna be out of town mon-tues. But other than that I was wondering if you possibly had a hi-lo grommet and a front handle clamp for the underside, both for the super xl.

Well, another update. Got a carb kit and some other odd and ends for the saw yesterday, got them all put on put some fuel in the tank, primed the carb and pulled it over about 15 times...nothing. I took the plug out and muffler off to find it flooded out (I had fuel running out of the muffler) So I dried it out and tried again without a prime again to get nothing. So now I am suspecting the ignition again (its as though it works intermittently) because the saw is obviously getting fuel and it should have good comp. as I just rebuilt it with all new parts (though I havent tested it). I guess I will just go back to the ignition with a tester and see whats up....

Hmmmm.... Ya know I had a 330 with a solid state ignition that would show a spark, but it wasn't actually firing at the right time, so it wouldn't run. It'd fire maybe once every 10 pulls or so and kick, but not start running. Again, it'd show a sprk if I took out the plug and grounded it, but the engine wouldn't run at all. Maybe you're having a similar problem Dan

Figured it out...kinda a duh kind of mistake. When I put in the new diaphram I forgot to make sure the pin went into the slot in the needle valve lever, which needless to say doesnt work very well. Well ole red starts up pretty good now and idles fairly nicely (needs a bit of adjustment) but all in all its basically ready for a new bar and chain and some wood

Yeah I am glad I finally got it going too, I did a little bit of a break in proceedure on it tonite and it ran and idled very well and accelerates smoothly and quickly. I can't wait to put it in some wood. Thanks to all who helped, be it advice or parts, I couldnt have done it without everybody. -obr

Wel, I do believe this project has reached its conclusion. New 18" oregon bar and chain and ran her through some big, old wood (20"+) ran like an absolute champ. Thanks to all again.
