Gear Drive, HP1A Tillotson carb, came with what appears to be a decent 1/2 pitch chain. (Needs a soaking) Acquired for free. It's complete. Even has the starter cover. It was taken apart by the previous owner. Probably due to the frozen connecting rod linkage which I was able to free up nicely. I broke one of the piston rings while I was in there....like a douche. Got 2 new ones on the way. I'll repair that, give it a good cleaning, reassemble and hope for signs of life. This thing is neat. I like the air vane governor and metal fuel line. Question: Can I use SCSupply's HP1B carb kit? ? Otherwise, I'm up the crick. And for no reason at all an update pic of my 7-19C, still going strong. I call it, "The Cackler'.

Cool, although the title of the thread had me hoping to see that you found one New In Box. LOL !

Nope. Used saw, used box, Brian. If it was new in a box I would have added a bunch of exclamation points after the title.... and I'd be sporting an ear-to-ear perma-grin. Alas, no dice.
I'll put the thing together over the holidays and see what I have. It ain't gonna be pretty lookin but who gives a rip. My guess is it's going to come down to my carb kit situation. I took the cover off the gear drive and what was inside was not oil anymore... a black non-viscous substance with an off-putting aroma. I only took a brief peek into the gas tank for fear of devastation. I'll save that for last.
JB, free is the bee's knees. ;D

I too was hoping to see something new, like it had been stored away for many years and just recently found. Have you tried calling Tillotson direct for the carb kit? I remember when I was working on my EZ that I was able to call them and actually talk to a parts guy who knew exactly what I needed for rebuilding my old carb. Got the whole kit and it was the right one. Customer service. You look like you have a collection going at the top of that picture. Feel free to post more pictures of those saws "for no reason at all." Go Bears

Like I was taking down a wall while remodeling and discovered a bricked in Homelite dealership. I may just give them a ring, RandR. These HP1A's were one of the first diaphragm carbs that Tillotson made ...or something like that. The kit is an RK-137 of which are now extinct apparently. I'm gonna shoot Sugar Creek a PM and god-willing I won't have to post that 'pulling-my-hair-out' smilie. Speaking of Tillotson check out this tasty document I just came across: www.vintagesnow.com/Carburetors_files/tilston%20cross%20ref.pdfIt's saying that the HP1A and HP1B both share the same repair kit so.....hmm, it looks like I just answered my own question...............I should probably get a second opinion. I have a lil Homelite EZ that ran until it didn't and a great Pioneer 1100 that ran until it was run over by a Dodge Ram50. (Not the biggest truck out there but big enough to render the saw useless. It still makes me sad til this day.) Other than those, I have Remington SL-9 which you can sort of see in the 1st pic. It runs, but looks like it was run over by a Dodge Ram50.

Finding meal moth larvae in your carb is good luck, right? UPDATE: News rings installed. If you look in the dictionary for 'engine blow-by' there's a picture of my piston in there. No scoring or other signs of deterioration though. Everything seems to be moving smoothly with nice compression. Carb kit news pending..... I know everyone is waiting on the edge of their seats for this.

Picked up a Homey 17 parts saw today...sight unseen. Mainly for these: That thar be a 28in. Homelite bar, 1/2 pitch chain with meat, and the clearing bow for good measure. Delicious. Here it is already stripped down: Although it's a Model 17, without the L, the carb was swapped out for this HL117C with the pyramid reed valve: It ran until a bent crankshaft did it in. Doesn't a pyramid reed valve send entirely too much fuel into the thing? Hmm, these are the mysteries of life. I'll be able to grab a whole bunch of parts off this thing. The paint is in better condition than the 1st one. I was really hoping it had the HP1A in it and the magnetos don't match up, but for the price it was worth it for the chain, bar, and bow. A riddle for all the Homey-ites. What is the part number of this doo-hickey? Hehe, the part of the crank housing that the handlbar bolts to must have broke off at some point and this was the solution. Homemade bracket. Woohoo! Anyway. finished cleaning up the HP1A with a SCSupply carb kit thrown in. Like to see it? Well here it go: Ain't that a purty sight. Well that's where I'm at. I'm in desperate need of a flywheel puller before any further work can be done. Come hell or high water this thing WILL run. Wish me luck. I'm WAY out of my element.

It isn't that hard to make a puller. Find a piece of flat iron, drill three holes to match the flywheel, and one hole for the crank. Use the nut on the crank to tension the puller then smack with a hammer and socket that fits over the crankshaft end. Don't pound directly on the crankshaft end or you will damage the threads.

Nice puller R&R! I'm having a local metal fabricator whip me up a puller. Should be bulletproof. I wanted mine diamond-plated too but alas, no dice. I did make myself a sprocket locker. Easy-Peasy Japanesy.
Quick question: Are the screws that hold the flywheel metric? Either way, what size are they? Fine thread?
