Noob here: Is there any specific portion of the House of Homelite that is dedicated to troubleshooting? I know this is the repair tutorial, but I wanted to know if there is anywhere that I can go and post about non-starting saws, then go through a series of diagnostics to see what's up with the machine. Does this exist, or is it just a part of the saw repair tutorial section? Or is it the help center that does this role? I just don't want to fill a semi-sentient area with dead-dumb questions...
(As you might guess from the post, I have some saws that won't start but I don't know where to start with them. I actually have one whose chain advances when I pull the cord. That can't be good!)

noob, There is not a "step by step" troubleshooting process but we will be glad to help you get those saws running They are Homelites, right Let's start with the one where the starter rope turns the chain. Like you said, this is not good. It will just take too long to cut down a tree. All saws have some form of clutch that allows the engine to run at idle speed without the chain turning. When the RPMs get high enough the clutch expands and drives the chain. In your case the clutch is locked up or the bearing is all rusted so when the crankshaft is turning, so is the chain. About the only thing to do is take the clutch apart and see what's screwed up. All clutches work the same but they are not all put together the same way. If it is a Homelite, tell us the model. That way we can get you to the next step. If it is some other brand we might need a picture. Craig

Of course they're Homelites!!! (This is their house, not any other, right? I don't even list my Poulan micro in my sig.)
As you can see on the sig, I have a few that are not running. I'm about to step out the door for church, but in this next week, I'll go through the list of the non-running ones and their various ailments. We will start right from the pull cord, because my range of chainsaw knowledge is right about there and not much further.

;D Very cute. I have not yet tried to cut anything down without combustion with this saw. My noob-iditiy does not extend that far!
