On my supers and xl-12 and other 3/8 chains Ive been using a 5/32 round file and it seems to work fine. But I've read some people use a 7/32 file and there are two different 3/8 pitch chains. Im I using the right file size?

Most 3/8 pitch chain, like Oregon's 72 series, use the 7/32" file. Using a smaller diameter file increases the chance of filing in too much hook into the tooth if you are not using a file guide. If you have a file guide and a small diameter file, you will not get enough angle on the cutting edge. Low profile 3/8 pitch uses a smaller file because the cutters are smaller.

Homelite branded 3/8 chain will say 38 on the drive link and I really doubt you would have LP chain so you should be using a 7/32 file.
