Hey guys I was just wondering if there is a way to tell the year, make and model from a homelite serial number? 21 years ago I was given a wooden box containing a tore down old homelite. It was my Dads who got it from my grandfather. I was told he lent it out in the early 80's to a neighbor who claims it just died while using it. Dad tore it down but never got around to looking at it and soon forgot about it. When my parents divorced I was helping him load up some of his old tools and we came across the saw and he said "heres a project for you". So for the last 21 years its been in the same box in my basement untouched. The serial plate just says Homelite Wiz Chainsaw serial number A1180689. There is no other info on the saw that I could find. Its got a very large bow type bar. I know there are 4-5 wiz models but how do I know which I have so I can try and get parts and service manuals/IPL for it. Thanks for any help

Homelite changed to an eight digit serial number sometime around 1969. The first digit in the eight digit serial gave us the year of manufacture. The Super Wiz 66 was still listed in the 1977 Product catalog so that would say the this version was the last of the Wiz series. Sometime around 1980, Homelite went to a nine digit serial. Here, the second digit gave us the year of manufacture and they also used letters for the year code. Your serial is A1180689. Are these numbers all together or is the A separated out? Any way you could take a picture of the plate and post it? It could be that Homelite had to use a letter in the eight digit too. We have ID'ed some saws that have an eight digit serial with 9 being the first digit and also meaning 1969. So, that would mean that in 1979 they would have to reuse 9 or change to a letter. The A for 1979 actually fits into some of the other serial number information that has been collected. Yes the "A" is seperated. The serial tag has been painted over but I'll go try and rub it lightly with some goof off so I can get a decent pic for you.... Thanks for your help, cant wait to figure out what model it is so I can start working on it

Thanks MSC for helping me figure this out. Would you happen to know anywhere I could start looking for parts. From the looks of the saw it is only going to need bearings, seals and gaskets unless some parts are missing but it looks complete. Thanks again

I don't know if I am doing this right, this is my first post. I am new to the chainsaw world and am having a hard time identifying a Homelite chainsaw I was given. There is no serial number or UT number. There is a Lot number of C6276 and another number totally separate, stamped on the lower front, 20 56843-D. There is no model either. I am posting to see if someone knows what model it could be and maybe what it's value is? It's also orange, very very large (don't know the cc, my guess above 50cc), appear to have both automatic and manual pump oil, does say homelite on the bar and the chainsaw, and has a 40 inch original bar. It runs really well to. Any help would be awsome! Thank you.

Welcome, a pic would help. If it's pulling a 40" bar with no problem, it's a lot bigger than 50CC's. My Super 1050's had 24" and 36" bars and they are 100CC's. Someone may be able to decode your numbers.
