I can't seem to find a clear answer on the net. What is the proper way to measure a chainsaw bar? is it whole length of the bar? Because on my super xl it measures 20 inches from bucking spike to end of bar tip.

The bar length is the cutting length. If you measure 20" from the tip of the bar to the front edge of the case then it is a 20" bar. The total length of a PT20503 is a few inches longer than 20". This length is just approximate because it will vary somewhat depending on which model Homelite the bar is mounted on.

I guess the rule of thumb I've heard is total bar length minus three inches...
