Well, I do believe I am finally about to commence rebuilding my Super XL project I started waaaay back in Dec. Figured I might as well start myself a thread for questions as I have never been in a saw this far. So here are my first few questions (more to follow...trust me):
1. I have taken this saw down to the crank and am replacing the lower and upper bearings (upper is already install - thanks btw rbw) so I have found a trick to use when installing the lower needle bearings, use a small about of grease ( I plan to use Lucas Hi-Speed Bearing Grease) to hold the needle bearings in place during assembly. Good idea or not? Also, the rod needs not go on in a specific direction does it? Lastly for this ?, is it imperative that I torque the rod cap, because i may have to get some other tools (extensions, etc) in order to torque them.
2. Ok, then once I get the rod on I am ready to put the piston on. When I do this the "arrow" stamped on the piston face should go down so the ring locater pins are away from the exhaust port correct? ( I think that's the way the old one came out, but it was screwed up pretty badly)
3. When I put the rings on the piston is there "right side up" on them or does it matter? What do you all suggest as far as lublicating the ring grooves, rings, cylinder during assmbly?
4. If I can get a pic up tomorrow I have one last question reguarding a greyish "scale?" on the crankcase face where it meets the cylinder...what is is (perhaps discoloration from the original gasket?) and do I need to do anything about it/will it cause any sealing problems? (i.e. try to remove it, i can't feel it just see it)
Well, I think that wraps up questions round one. Will be awaiting your replies so I can get going on this good ole saw (and do it right). Thanks all.
