I just rebuilt my 1972 XL-12 with a RK-23HS carb kit but the saw still has fuel running out the exhaust. Very hard to keep running. Do I have to remove those closing plugs? And what is under them? How tough is it to remove the flywheel to check the points? Thanks Roy

If you have that much fuel running out of your exhaust, I would check your metering lever/arm. Closing plugs, I think that you mean welch plugs. Under them are calabrated holes for your idle, and off idle mix. I'm not sure if there is one under the main. If there was a problem with them it would manifest itself as a lean condition( I think). I don't think the points are your primary concern. Good luck and keep us posted. Jim

Hi Roy! The welch plugs are just as CSW mentioned, your best off not touching them unless you have too. Itsodd to have fuel out of the muffler, but I would also guess meetering lever or the choke is closed? I left the choke rod off once and had this. Edit: I tried to find a breakdown of that carb for you, but its not in the link I have. If I find it ill scan it and post it here. .

Thanks guys for trying to help. The metering lever is the float level and part of the kit that I bought right?

Yep, its a little aluminum lever that goes ontop of the fuel inlet needle. Also, on some of these the lever needs to nest in a groove on the pump diaphram shaft on the end opposite the inlet needle.
If its not ingaged in the notch in this shaft it will cause flooding as it holds the inlet needle open too much, been there, done that.

There is also a hight spec for the lever, Just don't ask me what it is. But it is acheived by slighly bending the lever up or down.

The height of the lever should be adjusted to be level with the upper edge of the carb. I have used the end of a ruler to place across the edge of the carb and then adjust the lever to where it just touches the ruler. Works great when it is right. Too high, too much gas, too low not enough. I have looked over the settings for Walbro, Tillotson and Zama and all three are the same in this regard.
