I just bought a "NEW" as in never started Homelite Super XL Automatic (the red one). ;D The bad news is that there is no spark. I have tried the usual things: - checked the sparkplug by running it in another saw; - checked operation of the RUN/STOP switch with an ohmmeter; - disconnected the wire from the ignition module to the RUN/START switch. No luck. I took the saw to a saw shop (Stihl/Husky dealer) and they wouldn't touch it, said that no parts were available. I assume that I need to replace the ignition module. Can anyone help me to find what part number I need and what is the recommended way to pull the flywheel to replace the ignition module (assuming that I can find another one). The UT number for this saw is UT 105253.

If you do need to replace the ignition module, I believe the part number you'll need is A94605S. Jack's small engines (www.jackssmallengines.com) lists a replacement part number of 600940 which is available. That site also links to a parts database where you can lookup other parts. Also, the system admin. RBW has a list of parts in the NOS Homelite parts section which are very reasonably priced. I recently bought a couple of parts from him for my Super XL. I haven't received them just yet, but they should be on their way.

Check the flywheel, it might just need to be cleaned up.
Filling the Cyl with rope works good for loosing / tightening the nut.
I'm not sure what type of puller you will need since I have one apart yet.

Hi GNM!
First thing I would do is pull the starter housing off and let us know what color the coil is. If its blue its electronic and may be bad, if its black its a points ignition and you simply need to pull the flywheel and clean the points.
Im betting dirty points from sitting so long, but I could not find you exact IPL, only one that was close 10525-B
There is a link to a list of IPL's in the NOS parts section.

I haven't received them just yet, but they should be on their way. Jd, they were supposed to go out today, but I got snafued by the snow and I cant ship till monday. Sorry for the delay. Thanks for your kind words about my pricing! I try to keep things cheap as this is a hobby more than anything, with all proceedes going bact into buying more stock to re sell. When you get your parts, check the 1999 price on the NOS box! ;D .

Thanks a lot for the help so far. I will check the coil. I think it is black. If I can get this saw running by cleaning the points I will be really elated.
I loosened the bolt holding the flywheel on but the flywheel is on quite tightly. What is the recommended puller for removing the flywheel? I assume that the puller should screw into the two holes that the studs for the pawls for the starter screw into. Is that right?
TIA

The two holes locate the puller, so the center bolt of the puller pushes squarely on the end of the crank. Get the right puller so nothing gets damaged. Do not try to get the flywheel off with the 2 screwdriver and hammer method, you might get it off but you run a high risk of breaking or bending somthing, and on a NOS saw that would be a crime. Most auto parts stores will have small pullers. Good luck. Jim

Thanks VERY much for your help. RBW - you were right. The coil was a grey color but it is a points ignition. The points were very dirty. I cleaned them and after a good few pulls the saw fired up. The hardest part was getting the flywheel off. It was stuck on very tightly.

Look at that, I have a purpose! Good to hear you got it running, its a great bulletproof saw. Their also one of the easiest saws to work on as it was engineered in a straightforward manner. Its that "Form follows function" thing. Do you plan on using it or will it be a wallhanger? .

BTW, I forgot about the grey coils, thanks for jogging my memory.

I plan, with only mild misgivings, to use the saw. It would look nice as a wall saw but somehow that wouldn't be right. G.

for future reference why is jackssmallengines doing alot of sales they do triple the amount we do wish that can change we have a parts lookup site that costs us $ 350.00 a month we have to pay for it would be nice if folks would start ordering there parts thru us when it comes to Briggs Poulan AYP sears Tecumseh is on our main store linked at the bottom the reason im saying this is cause i am the owner and i am hurting financially hurting cause of the economy the way it is in our local area too many bills we have are past due cause of this slow business season we have to depend on online sales to make ends meet our link to the parts lookup is www.cmengineparts.com calvin

Is this the Jacks Small Engine in N. Tonawanda, Ny? I've heard not so good things about there counter sales. There about 3 miles from me, never used them, never will.

I just bought inner tubes for my mower from jacks because calvin doesn't list them on his site. The tires are pretty dry rotted so if they let go I'll see if calvin can help me.

No, this Jack's is from Maryland. Hey, you must not be too far from us, chainsawwhisperer? (well, Tonawanda is about an hour's drive from here). Cassadaga is where we're at.

Curtis, the tubes have straight stems but I don't know the brand if that's what you mean. The tires on my Troy Built mower always leaked around the bead and now they are also starting to dry rot. The tread is like new so I don't want to spring for tires just yet. From my invoice:
Summary of Items ordered:
2 20X800 8 TUBE TR13 V part # MWT808 $13.02 ea
2 15X600 6 TUBE TR13 V part # MWT60613 $7.94 ea
