Does any one know for sure if the XL 925 has the same body as the XL 700 ? Sure looks the same.
The reason I ask is, I found a junk 925. I thought I could replace the leaking gas tank, and upgrade to an auto oiler. I don't really want to buy the saw unless I can use the parts from it.

Pretty sure the 700 did NOT have an auto oiler. That's one big difference. Smaller 5/16" bar studs too. May be some other differences, but these come to mind.

Yes you are correct the 700 is a manual, and the one I currently own. The 925 is what I am considering for parts. What I would be after is the tank and oiler body. I could always change bar studs. Other than the tank my saw is in great running order. When I saw this 925 it got me thinking.

It might work but I've never tried it. The 700 was the first model of the family and the 925 the last. There is no need to change the bar studs if you find the tank will fit. Just drill out the clutch cover to 3/8". The back plate from either may work. One is points the other solid state. I don't know about the crankshaft. The rear handle may or may not present a problem depending on the mounting of the manual pump. Let us know how it turns out. ;D

I know I'm getting into a mad science project with this. But if it works I would be happy with the results. Fixing the leaking gas tank would be great, and adding the auto oiler would be a huge bonus. I patched the tank with some pour in liner but it still leaks a tiny bit. I have already converted to electronic ignition on the 700. Not really sure if the 925 ignition is any good, would be extra bonus parts if it was. The rear handle on the 925 is good, don't know about the crank shaft condition. Hopefully it would be good since I will probably need that for the auto oiler. I'm assuming there is some sort of cam on the crank end that drives the oil pump? I have not seen how the oiler works on these saws. I tore down an old XL 12 recently and it was the manual set up.

I don't have my parts listing with me but,,, the oil pump is driven by a worm gear that fits between the clutch and the shoulder on the crankshaft. I'm not sure if the 700 crank has the same dimensions as those with a pump. Other Homelites just place a spacer to take up for the missing worm gear space. The XL-901 is manual only too. You said you converted to electronic ignition, what does that mean? Are you running the little "points eliminator" chip? Keep us posted. Craig

I have a little electronic ignition unit on the saw. I've got a picture of it some where. I've used a bunch of these units in old saws and some other stuff. They work great. cmasalvage.com/cma_flineup4.jpg
