I am currently working on a Homelite XL saw, the small one, and have rebuilt the carb at this time. What is the correct ratio for gas and oil? I use the 16:1 in my SXLAO,, but did not know if that was the correct ratio for this saw. It was made in the early 80's according to the SN.
Also, how many turns out does the H and L adjusting screws need to be turned out when I initally try to start the saw?
Thanks!!

Mix ratios can get into a fun discussion! I personally use synthetics mixed at 40:1 in everything, including a couple small XLs. So far, no problems.

Start with both screws out about 1 turn. After you get it warmed up, adjust the idle speed and mixture then high speed. At wide open throttle you should hear the engine miss, some call this 4 cycle. So start leaning down the high speed until it runs without missing then open up the high about 1/8 turn. The thing is, don't run a 2 cycle too lean or it will seize up. Oil mixture, well according to Homelite, 16:1 with a good 30 weight two cycle oil and 32:1 with 40 weight. Technically, the two cycle oil rated TCW (two cycle water) is not the best oil for these saws. I use a good synthetic blend snowmobile oil that's rated for power valve engines and do what Dan does, 40:1. Works on the snowmobiles works on the chain saws.

The 40:1 is a good ratio w/any of the good semi-or-full synthetics. The regular homelite or poulan oils are just trouble unless you mix them to look like you are burning a tire pile.A good all around oil that I like to use is the Lucas semi-synthetic motorcycle racing oil.Its good oil,and it don't cost too much.I don't meant to put the homelite oil down, but homelite is just a name on a tag anymore. They come from china now,and you can get the same saw w/any number of names on it.The oil is just an afterthought.

I was referring to Homelite oils of the 1970's and 80's when this saw was new and what is published in the owners manual ;D Is Homelite branded oil actually available I'll have to make a trip to Home Depot and check this out

I wouldn't use Homelite branded oil.It don't mix right w/todays fuel.I work on this stuff every day,and I see many good saws meet an early demise using oil that's out dated in its technology. On the other hand I've got a Wally world poulan that's been through hell and back gave it to my cousin now he's cutting wood to sell with it.If it dies tomorrow it's more than paid it's way.
