I have an old 4-20 gear drive that is near completion with a rebuilt Tillotson carb and clean-up. I think the gear box was drained for shipment, as it shows no fluid in the "window". My question is: Should I remove the gear case cover and replace w/ a new gasket or Perma-Tex Aviation or put some fluid in it, check for leaks and keep on truckin ?
Maybe I am just looking for an excuse to take more screws out ;D Your comments are always appreciated.

I'd check all the way around the case to see if there is any indication that the gasket is bad. If it looks good, try a leak check. The gasket wouldn't be that hard to make from a sheet - just a lot of scissor work and punching. The oiler will probably make more mess than a little gear case leak. ;D

Santa Claus must have worked for Homelite in the mid/late 50's.......who else would have come up with Red & Green for a color combo on a chainsaw The darn saw looks like it should be hanging on a Christmas Tree !!
