How do you remove the plastic oil plunger???
Piston ring gaps: On all my other Blue XL-12 and Super XL's, the ring gaps are on the exhaust side. When I took apart the '80 SXL the gaps are on the intake side, Is this correct???
Thanks AT

To answer the ring gap question, yes, the ring gap is opposite the exhaust so all your saws are put together wrong meaning the piston was installed wrong. BTW, the wrist pin has a closed end, that end goes to the exhaust side. The plastic plunger - just pull...

Thank you by the way MCS, I never did get the plunger out, masked it off. Re-checked the others for backwards pistons, only one, re-fin XL12.
So, while I was at it, I thought I'd run some compression tests, came up with 90lbs. It has a clean piston and cylinder (no scoring)
New rings??? Or just turn the piston around???

Rings do loose their "spring" after awhile. This picture is comparing a new ring and old ring from an XL-800. I didn't put in new rings because the cylinder and piston are quite worn. The saw still had 125# compression - cold. If you only have 90#, that is quite low. Do you remember if you had to squeeze them a lot or did the piston slip into the cylinder quite easily? If the saw isn't for work, just display, I wouldn't worry about it. Does it run and idle OK?

MCS, Just pinched the rings in with finger nails, fairly easy. Fires up, But wont idle. Havn't switched carbs yet. Even tho they are on display in the shed, I still like to play with 'em My son's were even using the Polished SXL
