Got a couple of free saws from a friend. Have not worked on chain saws much and had some questions:
The 150 needed a new pull cord, cleaned the carb and it fired right up. I needed to back out the idle mixture needle quite a bit to get it to run - could this mean an air leak some where? The black boot bridging the carb to the engine does not have any gaskets and seems a bit stiff (maybe it was soft at one time). Should I make a gasket or use some type of sealant on these surfaces?
The 114 does not seem to have any compression, it spins real easy and fall when you hold it by the cord. Is this an indication of the rings, and if so are these available or am I looking at ebay for a good used set?
Thanks for any advice

Hi Phil, I am at work and not around my originals, however, I checked a copy of the 150 IPL and, from what I can see, there is not a gasket between the carb and the spacer. You could put a thin gasket in there, however, before you do that, I would replace all your lines....my bet is you have a cracked line and it is getting air that way.
As for the XL-114, if you don't have compression, you will definitely need to take the cylinder off. See if it is scored. The original ring put into the XL-114 was a funky stepped ring. I can't see the number very well on the IPL copy that I have here at work,....it looks like 67340, however, don't quote me on that one until I get home. If you want to replace it, it may be tough. It might be easier to change out the piston and possibly the cylinder and put in an XL-103 piston and cylinder....rings for it are the standard A-59436....which are still available in a lot of places.
Let us know how it goes!
Talk to you soon!
Joe

The 114 should have a compression release, the `113 does. Check that it's not stuck open.
