New to forum. Self taught small engine guy that likes to tinker in semi-retirement. I am by no means, an expert. I picked up a 360 last week for nothing. Just soaked, cleaned, and reassembled carb. Waiting for carb boot and plug to arrive to give her a whirl. Boot was crumbled, carb and gaskets in pretty good shape, and cleaned up transformer that held a spark plug that had seen it's better days. No idea how long it has sat, since the guy just had it sitting in his boulevard for pickup. When I pulled gas lines from the carb, one tore, with plenty left to cut off that section. I have three questions: I assume the gas lines may be in bad shape(rot) all the way to the tank. How hard is it to replace gas lines with new? (A video suggestion would be great) / Do you have any other suggestions of things to check or do to the Beast before my original attempt to start? / I will obviously using fresh gas. Am I correct that it should be a 32:1 mix, and do you recommend using Premium that I burn in all my other machines?

Non ethanol gasoline is highly recommended. It is usually sold as a mid range octane, 92-93. Hope the ignition is in working order, some of the earlier systems had failure issues. The 350-360 saw went through a lot of improvements and upgrades during its life. At the end of manufacture, the 360 was a very good performer. Have fun with your new project.

You can probably figure on all new rubber parts, that's typically about all a 360 needs.
Carb kit, fuel line, vacuum pulse line, intake boot, rubber engine mounts and maybe an oil line.

Take a look at Leon's videos for help with repair procedures. OK, a brief update. I cleaned the carb and replaced rubber carb boot and sparkplug. In the mean time, I discovered the chain tensioner "thingy" that goes in the bar hole looks like it is broken. Attempted to fire up and still nothing. I tested the ignition as demonstrated in a video with a multi-meter and a 2 wet fingers on the contacts little jolt in finger web. Both seemed to work(if I did it correctly). I hooked up a compression tester and got reading of 85psi on 6 pulls. From what I read, it should be much higher?; which would point to piston and/or rings? Then I will need to make a decision - remember I'm a self taught novice that has never taken a motor apart down to access to the piston. I have $13 into the project and don't REALLY need the saw. Do I dive in to learn for $13 and if I can't get it back together correctly, try to sell the parts to someone that knows what they are doing? I don't want to invest too much money into it but like the challenge of reviving what some leave on the curb as junk. |

First thing I'd do is pull the carb and look down the intake while slowly pulling the rope to get a look at the piston/rings to see if they appear to be stuck and/or if the piston is scored. You can get a better look from the bottom side but, depending on the vintage of your saw, the muffler is a little more involved to remove.
