One of my favorite childhood memories is fishing with my Dad. When I was growing up we lived near Rochester NY, and Dad bought us a Blue Fin rowboat with a Force 15 hp outboard motor. Twice a week he would pick me up from elementary school and we would drive 20 minutes to a place called Sodus Bay to spend the afternoon fishing. We'd always listen to The Cars on our way there, particularly the Candy-O and Door To Door albums (It's funny what we remember). We always joked that I was cooler than the other kids because they all had to ride the bus while Dad took me fishing! Anyway, we'd get to the boat launch, he would back the trailer into the water, and I'd dock the boat while he parked the van. We'd scoot over to a couple favorite fishing spots, which were two islands in the bay close to the mouth where the bay entered into Lake Ontario. My favorite fishing lure was a Worden's Flatfish with the green, black, and yellow "Frog" pattern. For about 3 years in a row, I could cast that lure into the water and within 15 seconds I'd hook a largemouth bass, and then another, and then another! I don't know what it was about that lure at that time, but the fish couldn't get enough! After a few years, the bay became completely choked with Eurasian Milfoil, and many of the best fishing spots were lost to the vile weeds. It got so bad that the propeller would get wrapped with weeds and wouldn't propel the boat after about 30 seconds. Fast-forward 20 years and I have never had nearly the kind of luck with that lure here in MA as I did at Sodus Bay during that time. I'll still hook a nice pickerel every now and then, but the childhood memories are what really make me smile.
