The gas tank on my saw is black wrinkle coated with something, and i need to clean the tank, but i don't want to damage it. the inside wall next to the oil tank is not coated. What is this coating and what can i use to clean out the tank ? You can see the fuel line mark on the uncoated part of the tank, when i drained off the old fuel.Did Homelite coat gas tanks? this saw was built in 1979.

They did line the tanks, but I haven't a clue what the actual product was. I clean tanks with a shot of acetone, but unless there's an actual leak, I don't worry about visible damage to the lining. If there's a leak, Redkote will seal it up.

Acetone should work pretty well...don't leave it in too long though. I generally pour it in, shake it around for about a minute and dump it out.
