Im curious. I have a c51 with a stack muffler, not really a muffler at all. I have a c5 and c7 both with stamped mufflers. Were these changed or is there some formula Homelite used to decide what got mufflers and what didnt. Of course both mufflers are broken and the stack is fine.

Well, a lot of the old saws, like the Zip, EZ and the gear drives didn't have much of a muffler. The early C saws and the early XL-12 had a muffler, if you could call it one, that was a cast rectangle with about 5 slots cut in the end. Someone on this forum nick named them the Tic Tac muffler because they look like a Tic Tac container. I think Homelite realized they needed to improve and reduce noise so those went by the wayside. Wear muffs if your saw has one of these. billg has some pictures in another thread that show some saws with the different mufflers. The one is an XL-12 and the other 2 with "straight pipes" are "C" saws. houseofhomelite.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=sale&action=display&thread=1066
