I have an old 20" Super XL that has no spark. Can anybody advise what to do and where to get parts. My saw is model number 10045a. I just ran this saw a week ago and it ran like a champ like usual. I tried it again yesterday and no spark. I did the classic hold the end of the plug against metal while pulling the cord and got nothin. Any help would be apreciated.

Check and see if wire came off the on, off switch and is grounding out on case. If not that try a different plug. Also check to see if any breaks in plug wire that might be grounding out. That's where I'd start.

This version of the SXL uses a solid state ignition module. Remove the rewind housing and check if the "coil" is blue. If it is, you most likely have a dead module. Just to eliminate the remote possibility of a bad switch, while you have the rewind off, unplug the wire leaving the module that goes to the switch and then put the rewind back on with a couple of screws and do your spark test. Use a new plug if you have one. Make sure the ground lead for the module is tight under its screw too. You should have a gap between the module core and the flywheel of about 3 thicknesses of paper. Give us an update.

well I did pull the cover and check that the wires were connected to the kill switch witch they were. I did try two different plugs just to be sure also. I figured it would be the module and yes it is blue. Does anybody know where i can get one or should i start with my local repair shops?

is there a simple way to test these? I would hate to drop 30 or more bucks on another untested part and hope it works.

If the gap between the core and flywheel is correct and the sparkplug wire is tight in the module and the spark plug terminal is in good condition - that is pretty much it. I sent you a PM - personal message.

You think that's high? Try $140+ for a module for a Stihl 066 or 056.

Would it make any sense(cheaper) to convert this saw to a points/condenser saw, then if a problem developed.....put the $12 magic chip in it to bypass the points and condenser ? I believe you can get a points and condenser module(used) for $16 or so bucks.

The XL-12 and SXL are the same.
