So I rebuilt this 701, pulled it apart today because I wanted to see how close these are to free porting..anyways the bottom of piston had groves from transfers, anyone know why?

I’m no expert so I’m purely guessing, but my initial thoughts are that that piston got hot and expanded during break in. I had a piston do something similar to that one time. Is it also possible that there are sharp edges on the transfer ports or aluminum transfer built up on them??

I dug out the correct original piston and it had the marks too, just never noticed them due to all of the carbon scoring

Wow, I've seen some worn pistons but I don't know that I've ever seen one with gouges dug that deep.

Is chrome worn away on the lower part of the cylinder? I hate to say it, but based on the original pics, that cylinder liner is probably not in great shape. Was it originally seized or did it still turn over?
