I have a 1967 homelite XL-12. Rebuilt the carb, new gaskets, diaphragms, spring, needle, etc. only thing i didn’t do was knock out the Welch plugs. Carb is a Tillotson HS-4D. Also, replaced fuel line/filter. The fuel tank was really nasty. Took weeks of soaking/shaking/brushing and dumping to get it clean. It’s not perfect but i got most of everything out. (Have feeling not seeing it thru completely is what’s my problem).
At first she was running pretty good. I was happy. I was hitting the throttle. Seeing a ton of smoke, but healthy return to idle. Now it will idle but, soon as i throttle, bogs/dies. It even sounds funny now. Like it idles, but sounds almost muffled/choked.
Thinking i need clean tank again. Maybe use some red kote and seal tank walls. Re clean carb and try again. Really don’t want to knock the Welch plugs out, but may do it.

Sounds to me like the inlet screen in the carb is plugged with fine silt. You'll most likely need to take the carb out again, disassemble it & thoroughly clean it again.Your needle settings should be 1-1 1/4 turns out from gently seating. The tank must be thoroughly clean in order to do a Red Kote on it.Try using a baking soda solution mixture on the tank.Vinegar works well too.If the saw continues to bog when trying to throttle up,turn the lo screw out another 1/8- 1/4 turn.

Will take a peak at it this morning. Fine silt! Yes. I thought i was crazy. Where on earth is that coming from? Sandy/silt doesn’t seem like something people put in gas tanks, but i know i saw it in the many rinsing/dumping of the tank.

IIRC you said the fuel tank was quite dirty. If there's just a little bit you didn't get out it'll find it's way past the fuel filter & into your carb! Another thing to keep in mind is that gasoline isn't as clean as everyone thinks! Ya gotta remember where it comes from - crude oil, which is full of dirt!
