I removed the carb. on my Xl. Upon removal the carb.the Base gasket tore which probably isn’t unusual,so I’ll need to replace the base gasket too ,the carb. Is a HDC 42 and under that it says 6/77 I assume that as a date of mfg.?( carb.) the XL is a1977 unit,I see that carb. Type numbers are followed by another number like eg.;HDC 42-1 ,HDC 42-2 ,etc. Where do we obtain that last digit number? Or is mine just an HDC 42? What I’m driving at is what carb. Repair kit do I need? I may not need one but I feel before I get inside it I’d like the parts on hand. Any help is good thanks. 46C7C743-DA7F-48C1-8295-9DCC63AE42E9.ico (72.73 KB) 53FDB183-8CA0-443E-85E0-221478DEB7B9.ico (98.39 KB) sorry for pic quality

The HDC carbs use kit K10-HDC. Stay away from cheap aftermarket kits. Use the Walbro kits.

Took carb the carb apart and to my eye and ear things seemed really clean with no tar or brown stuff so far went as far as the metering needle and spring I pulled a bit on the spring and either it was weak or I was a putz anyway it broke!Yep, that spring Leon says be careful , don’t lose it! I did not lose it but it’s broke. It would be nice if one comes in the kit I ordered , but not bloody likely!they are available from .63 -2.50 I’ll order a few. I’m not rough on small springs,I encounter them on Guns a lot, seemed brittle - I wondering have a Parts saw I can maybe use for now, maybe.do these springs get brittle as a rule?

Don't be too tough on yourself. The springs are generally VERY durable and often need stretching to help seat the fuel needle when pressure testing your rebuild. If yours broke it is probably a blessing to find out now. Likely the spring was corroded from water or ethanol gas storage. You should be able to locate a replacement HDC carb inlet spring on ebay, or maybe other sources as Leons Chainsaw parts. A used carb also a good solution. It is not common to find the spring in rebuild kits, but probably is in some Homelite carburetor overhaul ("Repair") kits that were available at one time (and hard to find today). Be patient and you should be able to find a suitable replacement.
