Two homelite units with problems

 I am really good at some things just sort of at chain saws,I dropped a message with Leon about one,that one first.
I have what I’m pretty sure is a XL-1,but the id and serial no. Is gone,if it is can I still find a way to figure where it fits in age and parts replacement? It is Orange/ red and white with the typical really low flat metal air cleaner I’ve seen other XL-1’s online ,there are no discernible I’d marks just a casting no.on the air box cover inside,it’s a 16” bar,manual oiler and might be points ign.There is a coil but might not be good,the original spark plug cable was cut and replace with a yellow auto spark cable that also was nipped off so no boot when I can I’ll try to reconnect another cable to maybe get some spark.it does turn over and appears to have some kind of compression with my thumb and just turning the flywheel it has pressure. Was there many different coils for this model? Was there points ign. and  more advanced ign.later in its production life?what coil WOULD work ? From what I do gather online possibly a costly part?part number? How about the chain? What size? Sorry for all the questions,,I just gotta figure out what parts and no.s.
  The second one is my lil red,I have not used it for acouple years,but cranked it over and it fired so I figured I clean it up and did so,when I tried to get a start and run from it,it starts after several pulls ,then runs rampant till it suddenly dies not longer than a a few seconds running. It does have broken priming bulb, strike one, and the red and white plastic adj. screws, strike two ,unless I can delete them? I don’t know the tune up process using them,help would be good here,too.the plug is a DJ8J champion,wrong one ,I know, but it works where the right one ,does not make contact in the boot clip!I have an XL-12 also it is my best ,go to saw and a Poulan I just also renovated,oh and aPoulan electric I just brought back with the help of some epoxy at the chain adjustment where the plastic case devolved so I have had some luck getting my yard armory ready!thanks for any help?

What kind of ignition system do you have now and what color is the coil?

SH, when ID stuff is missing pics are the best thing. What seems old to you, may be so new I don’t mess with them. I don’t have any saws with a primer bulb. I do have XL12’s and their variants from their first or second year to the last year. I’ve had good success replacing points with a Nova II electronic module.

The XL1 has a black coil and having simply forgotten that chainsaws had points at one time I never looked real close to see about points,I will look closer tomorrow and take pics,I can guarantee it ain’t new!lol my memory files fell out when I began researching this critter,I don’t even remember where it came from,but til now,it’s been free.the carb was the one thing that is clean an kept protected by the cover.
The other is just a regular old” lil Red” 16” ,that always worked fairly well for me,it has the primer bulb that’s cracked,and I’m not sure as I said of the carb adj. procedure with those limiter screws.

Most of the time those carburetor limiter caps get removed and tossed. For a saw that needs to stay original for a collection, I tune the saw and run it a few times before putting them back on "centered" so that there is adjustment both directions. What I typically find on a used saw is you cannot adjust the L side rich enough where the caps are from the factory.

One last pic and question,how do I get these out and replace with reg carb screws,or conversely how do you work around them to tune the carb

The coil looks like the Phelon A-65204. The limiter caps can be pulled off using vise grips. They are just plastic caps on top of normal screws.

Awsome thanks I suspected that but did not want pull crush or yank without knowledge….I have before!lol,would that be the proper coil for aXL-1?

It looks like the Phelon coil that is Homelite part# A-65204. You can confirm by looking at the top of the flywheel; it should read "Phelon".

So you are Leon?cool,these are the pics of the saw I talked with you on email,two,three days ago- of course your probably aware.I have a few homelite s,and realized I just have another with a case ,an XL ,old barns are generous! ,I will look at the flywheel again tomorrow and look for” Phelon” and hope this coil still sparks.in two weeks of scrounging that started with repairing an electric Poulen,I dug out anreturned to service a gas poulen,,my lil Red,and now an xl this on has a really short bar,in addition to my running XL -12,also have learned a few things I did not know and refreshed my memory banks.
