What is the best method for cleaning homelite air filters?

If it is a genuine Homelite filter, it can be cleaned with solvent - paint thinner being the most common. Aerosol carburetor cleaner should also work. You will need compressed air too.

I spray mine from the inside out with carb cleaner then blow it dry (same direction) with compressed air. The older paper filter(saws from the 50s) get soaked in gas and gently blown dry.

I don't know if this is kosher, but I've been using an industrial hand soap (Goop) and a soft bristle toothbrush. The soap does not contain any grit. I work the soap in with the tooth brush - let it sit for an hour or two and rinse with water - let dry. I've had good luck with Super EZ, 360, XL, C-72, etc. filters.

My tractor air filter(and pre-filter) are paper and I soak them in soapy water, rinse and air dry. These are the instructions from the john deere manual. Works fine. I am not sure if the lanoline in goop would stick to the filter fibres or not.
