So I ordered 2 (1 as a spare) intake gaskets for a XL-2 I'm working on. The gaskets I received were dried out and brittle. One broke with just a minor flex with my fingers. Is there anything I can soak the other one in to rehydrate it or should I not bother and junk it and look for a different company to buy from?

If I were you I'd do some complaining to whoever you bought them from.I didn't think those gaskets were made of cork.As an alternative, you can make your own gaskets with the appropriate thickness Fel Pro gasket material.I was looking for those gaskets last week myself & couldn't believe the price on them! As it turned out I didn't need any.

I told them I wasn't going to spend another $9 on shipping back gaskets that cost me $6. I don't know, maybe they'll make it right, we'll see.

They aren't cork...some kind of fiber that is pretty brittle even when fresh. They will seal very well, but do break easily. I've softened rubber parts up in DOT brake fluid; I'd bet it would work on that gasket as well.

I am no chainsaw expert but I have worked on all sorts of engines over the years and have never seen any gaskets that brittle. I was thinking I got shipped NOS gaskets that have been sitting in a box for the last 30-40 years. They were shipped in folded up cardboard with no plastic packaging. The original gasket tore when I removed the carb, it was very pliable. Whats left of it I can bend easily. As for the gasket I broke, I put a piece in ATF fluid and a piece in brake fluid to run a test.
