It's gotten very hard to find the coil new...I recommend looking through the Ebay listings for a good used assembly. Almost all 90-100cc Homelites from the mid 50's to the mid 60's used that same assembly, so there are many potential donors.

Yep those 55986 got hard to find a few years ago. I’ll admit I stored a few as I’d see them pop up on eBay from time to time. They don’t pop up nearly as often now. Buford Parrish who you may have heard mentioned on here, claimed to have replacement ones once upon a time. He sent me one but it had 3 wires instead of 2 and it didn’t fit the laminations on the mount either. He was cooperative in taking it back, no problems there I’ve done business with him since also but he did say that some people had just filed it down inside to make it work but he didn’t say what to do with the 3rd wire. There were some aftermarket ones available also from either standard magneto or lil red barn. Those worked but on the C series had to be filed slightly to clear the flywheel

I bought a couple from LRB back when they were available & they were a direct bolt on to a C series saw,no filing required.According to Buford Parrish,Lee at LRB no longer has the replacement coils because the casting for making them got broken. He wasn't selling enough of the coils to make it worthwhile to have another casting made.Buford & Lee do quite a bit of business together.

I asked on a Facebook page for vintage homelites just to see if they had any either, they told me to bake it. I have a few homelites but i thought the baking trick only worked on the blue coils or if they are wet and not working at all? My issue is the saw runs great for a couple minutes, then loses spark or has very weak spark, dies, won’t restart until it cools down. I have a spark tester on it and watch it while it’s running, and when it dies. I know, not the right spot to be asking but I figured why not while y’all are here’s. Sound like I’m on the right path with just replacing it or does baking it actually have an affect on these?

You could be right, thats why I mentioned they were either from LRB or standard magneto that had to be filed. I don't really recall which one. There is a thread here about those that had to be filed to clear the flywheel.

You're right John.I believe it was Rowdy who had to do some filing on his C-91,but as far as I know that was the only model.I replaced the coil on a C-7 without any issues.

No that issue was on most all of the c series as most are the same. I’ve seen the clearance problem on C-51,C-52, C-71 and C-72. However it’s not exactly relevant due to them not being available. I’m not sure if standard magneto still offers a replacement or not. The clearance issue was hard to detect and if the coil wasn’t filed first the flywheel would likely work it out on its own and never really be seen.

So I was looking around on the limited standard magneto website and it occured to me what might be some incredibly valuable information but information that probably doesn't exist. What we have when it comes to most of these ignition parts are Homelite numbers. If we had the original manufacturer part number like Wico, phelon or prestolite as examples it might make sourceing these hard to find parts a little easier. With that said, I would imaging there is a coil out there that would work in the place of this one. I was lucky enough to be in need when there were some NOS parts still out there. I did repair one coil though, from making the connection in the coil to the lead and then basically forming new casing around it with some jb weld. It worked actually just was a lot of work probably not worth it. If I had a large supply of various coils and lots of time on my had, I might would paly around and see what I could find that may work. The problem I saw with most of these coils that I ran across was that they became soft almost mushy. The clearance problme on the c series was mostly due to the fact the coil was under the flywheel. I don't think that is the case with the zip though.

I've got some of those NOS 55986-A coils. Feel free to PM me if anyone is interested. I've jumped on everyone I've ever seen advertised like this...I have 2 on hand. I would have 3 but the seller of the 3rd never delivered and after about 3 months I gave up hope. Anyway I would jump on these but I will let the OP get what he needs before I shelve another.
