My starter rope wont recoil in .....tore into it ...the plastic 59639-a and 59638 b are tore up ,,,,,But my spring is broken as well .........i have a casting 64398-a rope pulley...Most show 64446 a pulley .........Found that there is 2 different springs and are not interchangeable..........2 inch piece broke off spring with stamping holes approx 2 inches apart ...but cant find the outer loop part that fits in the slot of cover ...........so not sure what spring that fits ? Do the revision 1,2,3,4, all for the same saw ? ..........Red saw super xl auto 20inch bar ...no kick back model

The UT # would help narrow it down. The IPL for "Big Red & Old Blue" should be the one you need.
Edit:using the IPL I provided,I only see a 59638B as the plastic starter spring shield. The plastic bushing comes up as part # 64443.The spring is part # A94842.

Although there was a non-container spring years ago, it was replaced by the one with the container that Ed gave you the number for, A-94842. The inner plastic shield he gave you, 59638-B, is the one that goes with the new spring although I'm not sure what the difference is between it and the old shield. The new spring only uses one shield. Those parts should fix you up.

You said your spring is loose, not in a can. See if this IPL looks like yours, 24228.

IPL 24228 is for an old blue saw, correct? I wonder what the difference in the springs is? That IPL shows all the parts he listed in his post. Just wanted to see if we were on the correct track. The 58764-a spring was used in early saws. The a-94842 was used in the newer ones. If you search those part numbers, it will show you, that the end that goes to housing are different, but either one should work. I just prefer to use / replace what was in the saw, with the same part. If I have it. I have 7 / 8 housings here and they have both type springs in them.

That's great that there are still some NOS old style springs out there but that pn was replaced by the new one with the can decades ago so I assume our assumptions that the springs are interchangeable is correct. I don't know why they wouldn't be. As far as I know the housings never really changed, at least not the pocket where the spring goes. I completely understand folks wanting to replace old parts with like parts especially on classic saws. I personally would have leaned toward the newer spring though because they just seem to work better longer. The old loose spring in between the 2 plastic shields was terrible about getting gunky then not wanting to rewind. The newer spring with the can, not so much. I assume that's why Homelite made the change. Evidently the can keeps the spring shielded from gunk better than the plastic shield did.

I have replaced the older style with a new spring in the can and it works fine. Just remove the one plastic shield.
