We don't have an area for huntin' and fishn'. So I was wondering does anyone want to talk or tell stories about this stuff? I came up with this idea whilst eating 2 blue bill breasts, and 1 mallard breast (All cooked rare) and a baked potato. FYI, I love hearing stories from the 'oldtimers'

Another month and me and my buddy will spend a few evenings on the dock of his fishing club. Pitcher of beer, and some cheap cigars, pulling in northern pike one after another. All 'hammer handles' ( 12 inchers) then throw 'um' back. It's a hoot. One of these May's I'll get out turkey hunting, but there's always tons of stuff going on.

Before the wife and I were married we used to go fishing after work 2-3 times a week, you could have beer in the boat back then and it was usually overlooked if the game comission showed up. We had a cooler and a lil grill and would fish for our supper and end the day with a campfire by the lake, good times. We used to go after Crappies and Panfish and Perch (white and yellow) and would usually land and release 40-50 fish a day on ultralight tackle, we cooked about 4-5 each and about 10 if we got enough white perch, their delicious, like buttah! I had a system for finding them that allways paid off and when you were on them you usually got 10-15 fish before they would get spooked and scoot. Well, one day my system wasnt working and we went hunting for something to catch, bouncing jigs off of stumps and dropping them on top of docks and letting them fall in the water. At one dock I landed the jig right on top and saw a lil swirl in the water below, somebody was home and I had his intrest. I slowly bumped the rod tip, bouncing the jig across the dock untill it fell in the water and WHAMMM!!! FISH ON!!! Now I love ultralight fishing, nothing wiggles and has as much energy as a small fish and this was a big small fish.......Or I should say a small big fish. I landed a 12" Chain pickrel that wasnt as enthuesiastic about this whole thing as I was, he latched onto my finger while I was taking the hook out to show me who was boss. Lil bugger showed me so I let him go, held him till he got his breath and he calmly swam off. A few weeks later I thought I would look the old boy up to see if he wanted to play, he did and I landed him again and could see the first hole in his lip was healing nicely. Same dock, same tactics, same fish. I let him go and told him I would be back. And I cought him again a few weeks later, he fought like hell and I measured him a full 1.5" longer than he was the first time I cought him, he got stronger too, but didnt fuss when I was taking the hook out at all, he was kind of over the whole thing at this point. About two weeks later I thought I would look him up to see how he was doing. I trolled over and could see him chasing Bleugills around and thought I would go for 4. I did everything the same, but he wouldnt go for it no more. He even followed the lure to the boat a few times, always staying about 4-5" behind it and in no hurry at all. He would come within 10' of the boat, stop and look around and swim calmly away. A simply amazing encounter with a wild creature. I like to think I tought him about fishing and what a lure is, and would like to think that hes still roaming that lake today with a little knowledge of what not to do when people are around. I wonder if he still rembers me.

Hey RBW. Great story... Got one sort'a similar. Farm pond near the house is full of blue gill. We, and the neighbors catch them and put the small ones back and eat some of the big ones. Put most of them back too. There seems to be one catfish that hangs out around the overflow. We all have caught it at least once and always release. One of the neighbor girls caught it and took it home in a bucket of pond water with some bluegills fully intending to eat it. Her dad recognized it and had her bring it back and dump it in the pond. We have watched this one grow over several years. It doesn't take the bait anymore but I have seen its belly flash once in a while when I'm fishing there.

My buddy and I took the kids fishing yesterday for about an hour. We got scunked, but the kids had fun playing with the shiners Maybe we'll get out later today. The same friend is a charter captian, he had a charter yesterday morning, and the fishing tough also. Check out his site. www.rivermastercharters.com/captain.html

post yourself on the barn roof, then Lure it in at night with a dead field cat, then blast it with your 12 gauge. My buddies used to use accidentally trapped cats as the bait for Foxes. CSW

We used to go duck hunting in my younger days. Parent's farm has a beaver pond and ducks would come in to roost at dark. Beavers didn't do much good for anything other than provide some decent fishing and duck huntin' habitat. Killed more than enough timber with the area they flooded which means less trees to cut with a saw . It always amazed me how fast those ducks could fly! We had some domestic ducks for a while and they're a completey different bird. The domestic drakes couldn't even get off the ground. Dan

I took my 5 year old ducking this morning for about an hour. More to teach him patience, than to get ducks. We hunted a pond behind my f-i-l's house, we kicked 3 mallards off it as we walked up, but never saw anything else. It was just nice sharing the sounds of the woods with him! CSW

I hunted Strawberry Island today, with 3 other guys. Shot 21 ducks, 1 Red head. a bunch of Mallards, Bluebills, and Common Mergansers. It was a great day! 20 degrees, sunny, 10-15 MPH wind. Hunting my F-I-Ls water front tomorow with another friend and my boy (he'll only be down there an hour). CSW
