Can anyone shed some light on the differences between the 2000E, and the Super 2000 ? One of your members advised a production date of this unit as Monday - July 28th - 1969. This one is equipped with a split reed valve, the Tillotson HL273A carb, and the 64158-C cylinder. Is it possible that this is a late production saw that was built using parts meant for the Super 2000, but sold as a 2000 AO-E ?

The most unique part that stood out on the Super 2000 was the Dykes piston/ring. Same one used on the original 2100. Best way to compare differences is to download the Illustrated Parts Lists (IPL) and study them. Leon has them all for download and they're scattered in other sites also. Dan

Dan, I have downloaded the IPL's from Leon's site. In fact, I have an order on the way with some parts for this saw from Leon. That's where I'm confused. The IPL for the 2000 has a different cylinder listed - ( A-64158-1B ), but this saw has a cylinder closer to the one listed in the Super 2000 IPL - ( A-64158-1C ) ? The cylinder on this saw is a 64158-C , ( no 1 before the letter ) ? The other thing I noted was the split reed valve. I believe I saw somewhere that the 2000E had a different carb Number - HL-261A listed, not the HL-273A that is on this saw. I'm not sure if you can make out the cylinder number in the attached photo Thank you for your help, Tom

You can't necessarily trust the numbers on the cylinders...while they are similar at times, they are more of a casting number than a true part#.

Tom, Back to your original question, regarding use of parts for a later model saw (Super 2000) on yours, from things I've heard and seen, just about anything is possible. I'd also wonder if someone may have worked on the saw previously and updated the intake reeds and carb. Whatever the case, you have a nice saw. That split reed used with the 273 carb is still a mystery to me. Just can't visualize exactly how it works. If you understand it, please share what you know, because it's still in the magic realm to me. Dan

Dan,
I only thought Homelite may have used later parts if they were running low on supplies at the time of production, if in fact it is a late production saw. I can't locate the production dates of this model. The split reed is a mystery to me, but on disassembly it is in fact placed in the reed seat exactly where it would be in the Super 2000, according to the IPL - ( lining up with the pulse port ). I can only imagine that it may be placed there to give a better pulse to the carb ? Maybe Leon could shed some light on that subject with his extensive Homelite knowledge. If someone did in fact swap the parts on this saw, it was quite some time ago, as this saw appears to be in original OEM condition upon disassembly minus some missing parts. Unfortunately, it is missing a hard to find part from my research so far - ( the rear cylinder cover, and clamps for the decomp lever ), so for the time being I'll be struggling to pull it over after reassembly. Would you know where I may be able to locate these parts by chance ? I wish that I had access to one, as I may be able to reproduce a similar one by using a 3D scan of an original. I received my parts order from Leon, so I'll be reassembling it soon. I'll keep you posted on the progress, hopefully some smoke by next week, as I'm having the carb sonic cleaned, and waiting for the carb kit now. Do you know if the 273 carb is in fact a governed carb, as stated in the info from the 3rd edition shop manual that I found on Leon's site ? It does have both hi, and low adjustment needles. I also need to find out how many drive links for the 404 chain, as the chain was missing from the Homelite bar on the saw. I believe the bar is 28", but not completely sure how to measure the bar accurately, or decipher the bar numbers. If you have any leads on a longer bar for this saw that may be available, please let me know.

A lot of later reed designs did include one split reed and I believe you are correct that it was intended to improve cold starting. I can only guess that a Super 2000 cage was added to your saw decades ago or there was an undocumented change mid model run. As for the cylinder cover, I don't have a source at this time...my best advice is to keep an eye on Ebay as they turn up there about every 6 months. The carb does have a governor...just above the adjustment needles you'll see a brass plug with a screwdriver slot...that is the governor. You can find longer bars on Ebay occasionally, but they are hit and miss. To measure the one you have, put it on the bar studs and measure from the bucking spike mount to the tip of the bar. It wouldn't hurt to post a pic of the bar numbers either.

Leon, Thanks for your insight on this subject. For some reason, I can't seem to attach photos now. Probably just me, as I'm new to this forum. However the bar numbers are:
( The first digit is hard to make out ) C1612528 or 01612528

Thanks for your insight guys. Got 'er smokin' today. I installed a smaller bar, and chain that I have in .404, .063. If anyone has a 36 to 48 inch bar that they would be willing to part with, or any leads on one, please pass it along. This beast is in dire need of one ! Tom
