Merry Christmas All!,
Another new guy here who’d like to rehab our Dad’s old saw and am finding myself in need of the experts to help ID this old workhorse. Based on the info and pics I’ve found so far; I’m leaning toward a 700 or 901 model but am wide open to suggestions when folks find the downtime. The ID tag is long gone.
What I do know:
He bought it new approx. 1968 from a local dealer stateside and was used for harvesting pulp. Its second job was keeping us warm through Upstate NY Winters. Brother and I split and stacked many cord sharing axes in our younger days!
2” Cylinder Bore
Appears to have the thicker piston rings
5/16” Bar Tension Studs
Looks like a Manual Chain Oiler Only - saw just one hose in the oil reservoir
Not sure about a Compression Release, if it has one, we never knew about it!
The Red Clutch cover was a replacement from back in the 70’s or 80’s as I recall.
I haven’t pulled the flywheel yet so can’t say if it has points or electronic ignition, but can if required. Will be getting in there either way to inspect it.
Thank You for this informative site. It’s always interesting to learn that others have previously embarked on similar endeavors in so many varied niches, and there is usually an established knowledge base available for most anything if someone is willing to look.
Thank You,
D.McB

Not sure why, but it does run!
My apologies for the ruddy appearance, I planned on cleaning it up before pics, but wanted to get rolling on this end since it’s like minus 450 degrees Kelvin out there today!
Would like to nail it down and get a model number if possible so I can order a service manual and correct parts the first time. It’s not expected to become a front line saw for our current annual routine of turning deadstand into firewood, we have modern saws for that, and a power splitter now too! Still enjoy swinging the axe when we get into some easy wood... I can guarantee the saw will be used a few times each year for nostalgia’s sake.Thank You for this informative site.
