I bought an older XL on feebay for $20 for parts.Wouldn't you know it that it turned into a good running saw.It didn't have any spark when I got it,so I figured I'd clean the points.I didn't really have much hope, but after eyeballing the gap at .015 I put it back together & almost fell off my chair when it had spark.I put some fuel in the carb & after a few pulls it fired.I thought "oh what the hell,I'll put a new fuel filter in it & some fuel & see what happens".I had to give it about 3 primes to get it to pull fuel on it's own.A couple minor carb adjustments & it ran perfectly, except for the cloud of smoke.I pulled the oil cap off & saw that someone had replaced the oil line,no duck bill present.I'm figuring that whoever replaced the oil line ended up crossing the lines which make it suck oil into the crankcase. The saw has been sitting for many yrs. - the chain is partially seized & I have it soaking in penetrant.I'll get some pics on here when it's finished.BTW,it's birthdate is coming up on Jan.3rd,made in 1978.

It's nice to get one that isn't a total pain in the butt once in a while!

So much for it not being a PITA.I went to start it again tonight & it wouldn't start without a prime,so I guess a carb rebuild is in order. Then I noticed it running on the high side.I did the tip test & it's gonna need crank seals.Oh well,it's winter time & I have the time right now.I gotta tear the engine out anyway to service the oil lines.
